Another clue here is this only seems to be happening on the latest release of P3. We have noticed older versions show a normal load.
We are investigating but think this is more how P3 works than a true performance issue. We have been doing testing on sites with P3, and New Relic. New Relic shows a normal load profile while P3 shows similar to what you are seeing.
If you have access to New Relic it would be great if you could share a comparison…

yep this is a bug. All day events that occur on the last day of the month display incorrectly in Month view. We are releasing a fix soon to address this.
