I actually figured it out, Cadillacandy, ten minutes after I posted the question. My / directory still had an index.html document in it, placed there automatically, I guess, by 1&1. I just deleted it (using my FTP program), and ta-da! Now https://www.mydomain.com/ goes where it’s supposed to. See if that’s your problem, too.
