You could use the code here – https://www.jesseheap.com/phplistapi.php in combination with a form to allow users to subscribe to phplist. The code allows you to get around the requirement of using their somewhat inflexible template.
I’ll also look into creating a wordpress plugin to allow people to easily add this functionality.
