thank you alchymyth. i did use firebug for a number of other fixes, but it didn’t help me isolate the page height issue. thank you for pointing me to #primary in the css. This is the code:

esmi, thank you once again for your repeated attention to the child theme issue. I am aware of that. I have created a child theme for twenty eleven and it is now activated. I am continuing to look for help on my original question with regard to the iphone issue. Can you provide any help on that? If not, can you please suggest a simple theme that will be easy to customize? I simply need a background image (ideally between 800px and 1100 px wide), a navigation menu that I can easily customize the size and colors, and a page content block.

I reinstalled a fresh version of twenty eleven and noticed it now is displaying a “mobile” version of the site on iphone. I think this may be the cause of the problem. I have never had this issue with wordpress templates before. I think this is the relative styling. Is there a way to eliminate all the relative stuff and simply load the same styles for all devices? In the past I have not had problems with this.

No – you only add the changed/custom CSS to the child theme.

Ok thank you for your help with regard to the child themes. I seem to have a grasp on it now.

As to the original question, can you provide any advice on how I might get the pages to display properly on iphones/ipad? It seems to only display a portion of the page width on these devices and the alignment is off. I am guessing it has something to do with the “Relative Structure”? Despite some fiddling, I cannot find a solution.

Thank esmi. I created a child theme following those instructions. I then added the info from the .css style sheet from the twenty eleven theme to the child theme, but now there is a lot of stuff displaying improperly. I obviously did something wrong, but am not sure what. Since I have already edited the original, do I need to delete it and reinstall the unedited version and then add that to my child theme and do all the css editing over?

Also, do you think getting the child theme to function properly will solve the alignment issue or do I still need to address that as well?

Thank you esmi, that was the problem. For some reason I had two forward slashes in my settings.
