Since being told that my wp-comments-post.php file was under attack, absorbing so many resources as to prevent the site from loading, I installed the “wp-spamfree” and “bad behavior” plugins hoping they would relieve the problem. They have not.

And now, in addition to the connection/loading problem, on those rare times when I am able to get into and use the admin page, I get this at the top of it when I save a draft:

Any ideas for a fix?

As it stands, this connection error problem has driven my stats into the ground, and is forcing me to abandon the blog. Hopefully, this forum – which appears to be my only remaining resource – will help produce a solution.

One more thing: the tech from my hosting service also said, “it is possible that the number of visitors
to your site is overwhelming the number of mySQL connections available
for your account. You can minimize the impact of these account
limitations by specifically closing the mySQL connection in your PHP
code so that those resources are freed for further page views.”

Does this suggest any fixes?

I tried the experiement with the plugins, with no effect, unfortunately. Meanwhile, my hosting service examined the issue, and here is what they said:

“one of the files in your blog folder was getting fairly heavily trafficked by what appeared to be automated web crawlers. When we renamed this file, wp-comments-post.php, as a test, within a few minutes your blog was resolving properly again. After verifying that the large volume of traffic on that file from web crawlers was causing the issue, we did rename it back to its original name.”

Any suggestions on how I can resolve that?

Just thought I’d fill you in on the outcome. I contacted Scott Wallick, the author of my theme, as you suggested. He made two recommendations, and the first one I did – which was to upgrade to the latest version of the theme (Very Plain Text) – did the trick.

So, your excellent plugin is up an working at full speed.

Thank you Alex – I viewed the section of your documentation you indicated, and then went to the style.css file for my theme, which is Very Plain Text, in my themes directory (this is hosted by Yahoo Small Business, by the way, if that makes any difference), but I couldn’t really understand what I would want to modify in order to allow the icons to become visible on the site. I’m a reasonably competent consumer/user of these products, and I can tinker with html, but that’s restricted mainly to manipulating text and images in html – not code. Should I refer this question to the author of my theme?

LesBessant – you were right – I called my host, they found nothing wrong in the site admin files, and said to wait ’till the evening to see if the MySQL servers restored access, which is what happened. No one seems to know why, though, so there is no way to assure that it won’t happen again. Anyway – thanks.

whooami – thought I’d drop you a note re the final resolution on this. The Aksimet plugin turned out to not be the problem – after unpluggin it, the problem went away for a short while, but that was only a coincidence – it returned a little bit later.

So I did something else you hinted at – I googled the key phrase in that appeared in every instance of the stray code, and, sure enough, it popped up all over the place, usually in connection with WordPress blogs hosted on the Yahoo Small Business server, like mine is.

The general opinion was that the culprit is the Yahoo statistics feature, so I turned mine off, which took two days to take effect, but it’s been two more days since that and no stray code, no distorted posts, and a much faster, more efficient, and stress-free time putting up posts.

Just thought I’d let you know the final resolution for this issue, just in case you run in to it again, and to let you know also that your response had the clue to closing it out.

whooami – thanks! I was using Aksimet, BAStats, wp-cache, add-to-my yahoo button, and customizable permalinks. I turned them off and on one by one, starting with the yahoo ones, and it seems the culprit was Aksimet. Since turning it off, I have had no problems with stray HTML code or distorted posts at all. Amazing! And a big relief.
