First – there is hope! I have been going through the same process. I am not so good at reverse engineering – but I am pretty good with cut & paste.

Look for a matched set of a WP Theme and a website Template. Compare them and see what modifications need to be made. Then make the same modifications in your WP to fit your site. At least that is what I did…made the Theme CSS mimic the site CSS – cam colors, graphics, etc

I don’t have it up just yet, but a general user will never see the difference at my site.

Do I need to put some code somewhere else to activate this?

I could use this – care to share the PHP with me? I am great at following directions & cut/paste, but do not understand PHP at all.

Give me a “find SKLDJHF and change to LKFOITR” and I’m good!

I also have a need to keep registered users login without seeing the dashboard – it would confuse the heck out of most of my folks.

I may have a use for this – I am just beginning to use WP and I keep finding more and more neat things that I *can* do that I never knew I would *want* to do. I have marked this for future reference.

There is a plug-in that sets “roles” which limits what categories certain users can see.
