Thanks Nate. I was beginning to suspect that there are some differences between the choices one get when running multisite vs. single. I’ve come across several configuration screens that don’t offer up the same options the dummy book says should be there. I’ve given up fretting over the fact something may be wrong with my installation and moved on in each case. Thanks!

I’ll play with this but it doesn’t seem right that this would have to be a global setting for all sites. Also in the network admin setting it does not offer a default user type for those users registering. I was hoping to see that by enabling it in network admin that I would see the appropriate setting on my blog setup then.. Unfortunately, I did not…

Membership — Anyone can register and then set new user default to subscriber, contributor, author, etc

According to all the documentation i’ve seen this should appear in Settings under General Settings right after you specify the admin email address. But I don’t have it on my screen, nor do I find it anywhere else. Where would I specify that users must register for membership prior to accessing my blog?
