    I’m going to try it all out again using domain names I actually have access to DNS for first though. I won’t be able to change these three until I am ready to go live, but have plenty spare I can play around with and a server to try it out on! At the moment I am trying to conceptualise it whilst not being able to make the changes in “live” that will enable me to see it work outside my MAMP install!

    Cheers,

    Thanks. I will study and try to fathom it out using the standard WP way as I do want this to be able to be passed on to others and/or hosted on services that may not give us direct access to VH definitions of even use Apache!

    So thanks for the pointers. The essence, however, for making a decision about whether to proceed with all of them on a multisite, is that it is definitely possible to ensure that even though the url https://italiancinemaaudiences.org/italiano *looks like* a location “below” https://italiancineaaudiences.org I can point it at a different multisite site and still have the urls shown in the user browsers as https://italiancinemaaudiences.org/italiano and https://italiancineaaudiences.org respectively for the separate versions.

    I guess the other decision I wanted to be sure of is whether to use multisite subdomains or multisite sub-directories. I’m beginning to feel that the subdomains way might be better for what I wanted to do, but again, that might just be me being confused between URLs and folders/sites ??

    Thank you for all your assistance with this. The pointers have been very useful and reassuring that I’m not trying something that is abnormal. I will investigate the possibility of doing a polylang setup too now instead of later.

    Cheers,

    I am indeed developing the proof of concept on my local machine, but from what I understood, etc/hosts cannot cope with folder levels – I thought it has to be <IP> <hostname> only. But will try what you suggest to get it working locally.

    I’m used to tinkering with Apache and without Plesk or cPanel (it would probably be a <folder> directive or a rewrite rule) but am not sure what access I will have to that level of configuration under the Bitnami WP MS appliance thing I’ll be spinning up to host them permanently so I’d better work that out!

    Cheers again!

    Thank you @xkon for that very helpful and timely response.

    I would kind of like not to migrate as it currently is because the current multisite hosted one is for a particular research team, and we anticipate the one we are setting up being used for others, potentially from other departments. So we want to make the “main” site something more generic and have *everything* set up as subsites.

    So I have set up:

    wpdev.host-domain.org as the main site and
    wpdev.host-domain.org/ica serves up https://italiancinemaaudiences.org
    wpdev.host-domain.org/eca serves up https://europeancinemaaudiences.org

    …and both of those seem to work fine. So all I need to do now, which I assume will involve some Apache rewrite directives in the VH file, is to find a way to map
    https://italiancinemaaudiences.org/italiano => wpdev.host-domain.org/italiano

    Thanks again,

    Jock
