There is a new crop of hosts specializing in WordPress. The value these specialist hosts offer is that they can presumably give wordpress-specific support which the average host cannot. I am using one now though I have momentarily forgotten their name ??

Just paste the adsense code in the THEME files, not in the body of your posts or pages. The typical place to put Adsense is the sidebar template. If you want to put Adsense in the body of your posts or pages, you have to use the Adsense Deluxe plugin.

Moshu, can I take this opportunity to ask what exactly is the write server permission for this? Do any of the chmod boxes for “public” have to be checked? I’m just concerned about the security issue (had a site hacked) and am weighing different opinions about what’s the best permissions setup.

Whether a design is good depends on the purpose it’s intended for. What is the purpose of your site? If your site is a personal blog, WP has a bazillion designs that work quite well for that, as proven through their use on thousands and thousands of sites. If you want to use WP as a CMS, there are a lot fewer good designs, but there are still some. Semiologic themes are great, though you have to use the Semiologic plugins for them to work.

As I stated, it’s not a true html frame, but that doesn’t change the fact that from the user’s standpoint, it’s just as bad. True, this means that the page content won’t show up separately from the frame in search results, one of the worst problems with html frames, but it’s still a frame from the point of view of the user.

By “out of style,” I merely meant that there are obviously far, far fewer sites today that use frames than there were five or six years ago. It’s rare to see a new site that uses frames today, compared with when Netscape first invented them, when they were used everywhere. You can probably still find a new site that uses frames, but they probably have a very good use for them other than asthetics or taste (for instance, the way about.com uses a frame when sending you off-site; it wants to keep its ads on your screen–isn’t that a great use of frames??).

And this departure from frames was based on numerous user studies, as well as in-the-field tests of website conversions, and opinion polls, all of which showed that users hated frames. Just check out Jakob Nielsen’s site ( https://useit.com ) for this information.

I wouldn’t dwell on the point except that frames are so widely regarded as bad web design that it’s upsetting to see a good designer unaware of their problems.

I’m almost certain I’ve seen a WP plugin for forward to a friend that uses smtp rather than php to send it. I just can’t remember what it was called now. Of course, that’s not fullproof, but from what I’ve heard, php email scripts are much more vulnerable to abuse.

I’ve never had nor heard of any problems with the WP database itself being hacked, just the theme and plugin files, so I’m assuming the WP-hacking problems are server-permissions-related. Was that your experience?

concepthue, you already have the ability to pretty much control what the user sees by making it fixed-width, as you have done; that means that a bigger window will only produce a large blank space to the right of the main page, which no one will notice. The only thing you can’t control is whether or not they’ll also see the footer, but there’s so little of interest there anyway, what’s the point of making them see it?

Still, i think it could be more prominent. Maybe where you have the award image now you could have a little box with an offer like, “contact us for an information pack”…or whatever the appropriate offer would be, with a link to the form for contacting you.

1. I really like the boxes, for one, because they are visually striking and make it easier to distinguish different sections of the navigation from each other. I also like the color scheme.

2. OK, as for resizing the browser: yes, very very very bad. It’s bad because it gives you a little scare, like your computer is about to crash or it’s been infected with adware. People will close the window and hit the back button and never return. Of course your site doesn’t actually make the browser crash or install spyware, but it will give people that feeling of concern that will make them just prefer to visit one of the other 6 billion web pages out there. Also I don’t appreciate it that when I leave your site I still don’t have my browser’s scroll bar–have you thought of that? Maybe maybe you can self-justify taking away the user’s scrollbar when they’re on your site (maybe). But how can you say it’s ok to take away apart of their browser when they’re not on your site?

3. The scroll bar in the middle: that’s a frame. I know it’s not the old-fashioned html frame, but it’s functionally the exact same thing. Frames have gone out of style for many reasons, all having to do with the fact that they make the site less usable. Just read Jakob Nielsen’s writings on the subject. Yes, the current default browser setup of scrollbar on the right side of the page in the web browser is vastly preferable to users as demonstrated in numerous usability studies (again, Google Jakob Nielsen and frames). Also, the frame prevents you from making the most out of your screen real estate by forcing the little bottom navbar into view when you would rather use that screen space for reading content. In short, it’s an imposition on visitors, even if it was intended as precisely the opposite.

I hate to ask this, but how do we report abuse and ask that a post/thread be taken down?

There is one thread now where I have been accused of spam, trademark infringement, copyright infringement, “peddling rubbish” (on a site that’s not selling anything!), having a site that is “rubbish,” and lacking common sense. Regardless of whether the individuals are justified in their opinions, I think the sentiments could have been better conveyed in a private communication rather than in a public space.

I am not thin-skinned, and my original post was a little unclear (I was pretty tired when I wrote it) but this has really gone too far. How do I ask this thread be removed?

Also, would there be any chance of having a WP board on the forum for people who are using WP as a CMS or “extending” WP from its original blog function? If you are doing anything but a personal blog, there are bloggers who will take a great deal of suspicion toward you and accuse you of being a spammer, if not Satan himself. Plus, your goals in creating a CMS-style site are likely to be hard for someone who’s doing something else entirely to understand.

Also, while I will admit this forum is a fantastic and almost unparalleled success, I’m wondering if you’ve strongly considered having an option to report abuse so that people don’t feel tempted to deputize themselves mods and start flaming posts accusing people of every bad thing.

Note of caution: be very careful with any php-based post forwarders.

One of mine was hacked and used to send some kind of spam. My host disabled the script and threatened to shut the site down if it happened again.

I’m not very knowledgeable in these things but I’m guessing one of the big issues would be chmod server permissions–make absolutely sure you have not accidentally let the script be world-writable (which you can easily do if you’re trying to use the theme editor and haven’t set the permissions just so).

3. Accusing someone of infringing trademarks is quite serious. No, I am not infringing the trademarks. You can incorporate trademarked and copyrighted images into a collage-style work when the images do not imply that you are the business or are competing with the business represented by the trademarks.

4. I have seen countless posts on this particular board, which is dedicated to non-technical questions, on issues of graphic design and even SEO, which is quite far removed from the technical fundamentals of WordPress. At least my question was about what to do in creating a WP theme.

5. As a rule, on a message board or anything like it that requires civil discourse:

+don’t insult people and say their work is “rubbish”

+don’t accuse people of illegal activity

+If you really thought I was starting posts here that are being disruptive, you should have contacted a mod rather than throwing oil on a fire which had already died down.

Those errors seem to be minor technical errors in the theme files and the statcounter javascript code. The theme is the Adsense-Ready theme.

Let me make this absolutely clear:

!!!!!!!!!!WordPress seems not to be adding p tags for carriage returns I input in the textarea of the page writing webpage of the admin area.!!!!!

That’s the problem I’m asking about.

Under the last version of WP, I could have sworn that when I did this, the p tags would be inserted even if I had input other html directly. Now, they’re not, and when I tried inputting the p tags there were other problems formatting-wise.

Could someone please point me to any information on how WP 2 handles html in the writing area when the rich visual editor is turned off.

Note to anyone else who’s having this problem: make sure you have actually completely deleted any WP files from public_html and www and also have delted the mysql database (uninstalling with fantastico should do all of this, unless it gives you an error that it couldn’t uninstall fully, which happened to me).
