In reply to: [Sketch] Any point in using regular old ‘Tags?’ (I love Sketch!)Hi Kokkie,
Thanks for all of that advice. I have a search plug-in on my site…

…but it’s ‘Ivory Search.’ Interesting that the other search plug-ins you mentioned look at tags, project tags, project types.
I can understand how not using the same names for tags and project tags could be a problem. Google for example might see it as spammy SEO trickery?

In reply to: [Gutenberg] Gutenberg is messing up my old Classic Editor pagesThanks for the tip. Sounds complicated, but maybe I’ll give it a go ??

In reply to: [Gutenberg] Gutenberg is messing up my old Classic Editor pagesHi There,
Because the pages were impossible to edit and I couldn’t tell which images were which—or if they were even truly there or not.I uninstalled Gutenberg and I think everything will be OK as long as I stick to the Classic Editor. I think. I hope.
When I started using Gutenberg a couple of weeks ago I was getting quite enthusiastic about it—despite many serious usability problems—now, I hope to God I never have to go back to using it.

In reply to: My images aren’t previewing in the editor :OAdded note:
I just made the images preview in the editor by selecting them, launching their pop-up window, and clicking the ‘Update’ button. A long labourious process.

In reply to: [Gutenberg] Gutenberg is messing up my old Classic Editor pagesJust revisiting a page on one of my sites today so I can edit it.
In Gutenberg, it’s a mess in the editor. None of the images display. And on the live site, one of them is actually missing.
I’m afraid that my whole website has been wrecked by Gutenberg. Christ.

In reply to: [Gutenberg] Images are not shown in postsSame here today, on a post i put up ages ago.
Gutenberg is a nightmare.Forum: Plugins
In reply to: [Gutenberg] Gutenberg is messing up my old Classic Editor pagesThanks Paul and Marius.
I reverted back to the Classic Editor. Trouble is, I don’t have the advantages of the new one.
What happens is that old posts all get lumped into one block and i can’t even edit the HTML behind them.
I also find weird code appearing in the visual editor, like for the image captions. One thing I hate about the new editor, despite its advantages is that there’s no ‘most used tags’ facility. That was a real time & labour saver.

In reply to: [Gutenberg] Editing simpe pre-Gutenburg pages—tricky: all in one blockThere are weird things happening in the editor with the pre-existing content. This is showing up in ‘live view’ between 2 pictures and the ‘close caption’ tag is appearing after the second pic.
[caption id="attachment_2362" align="aligncenter" width="470"]
I’d also like to insert a another picture inbetween these two pictures, but I’m not sure that I should because
1. It’s all in 1 block.
2. It might go screwy if i do
3. I can’t get at the HTML to fix an issues that might ariseForum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: [Sketch] how to create the tiled homepage look?Hi Tari,
I sympathise.I spent about a week trying to figure it all out making lots of mistakes along the way and pestering good people here—like Sacredpath (above). There’s virtually no useful documentation from the themes or WordPress. I wasted a hell of a lot of days.
To get the tiles of thumbnail images working:
1. you need to enable the portfolio function in the Jetpack plug-in (I think I’m right in saying that this is necessary). Note: You may not have Jetpack installed—yet.
2. You need to use ‘portfolio shortcode’ which is dead easy to use, within the ‘Pages’ not posts, that you want the thumbnails to display on. I’m not a web developer and even I can do it. It’s meant to be dead simple.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/3. You need to set those pages that will display thumbnails to ‘Full Width’ or ‘2 column’ template NOT portfolio template. I made that mistake.*
4. Decide that one of those pages will be your homepage and go into dashboard > Appearance > Themes (I think) and you’ll find an option to choose a Page as the homepage.
That should help you get what you want.
* I originally set my homepage to ‘portfolio template’ and it caused me a world of pain. It’s not necessary. I think it’s a simple way to just have thumbnails on your homepage, without using shortcode, and which sipmply displays whatever the latest projects are. Shortcode is better and gives you way more options.
Best of luck,
John White(I should make a proper post on this and put it up here)
Thanks Tracy,

In reply to: WP is resizing images that I upload to postsHow tech instructions often look to me—with my luddite brain:
‘Don’t click this button off, if you’d prefer not to un-resize your images to a size that’s never not unlike the size that you originally didn’t want it to not be. Sometimes.’

In reply to: WP is resizing images that I upload to postsOK, I have the solution! (arggh)
The image is resized because I had ‘Serve images from our servers‘ switched on in Jetpack.
As soon as I disabled this, the image went full size.
That’s a great useful feature. Maybe it should look like this:
Don’t squash images
Jetpack will not resize your images downwards if you un-click this button.??
In fairness, it might be that this only ruins image display on non-responsive websites. Making my site responsive will be a huge job for another day.

Hi Tracy,
Sorry, I forgot to get back to you! That’s interesting. I thought the system could figure out shortlinks. It might explain why I never see numbers for Twitter. And maybe even be why my Google Analytics rarely registers Twitter visits?
Would it have anything to do with short-versions of URLs? TinyURL, Bitly, Owly etc.
??
