Hi Tracy,
The ‘shares’ — if that’s what they are, were on Facebook ‘Pages’ rather than my own profile. And I’ve transferred those Pages to a new anonymous FB account. You can see that it’s working here—near bottom of page:
https://johnwhiteillustrator.com/portfolio/newspaper-illustration-education/To be honest, whether they’re ‘Shares’ or just ‘Likes’ is a source of confusion to me at the best of times. They seem to have the same effect on the count—usually.
I just checked Sharecount.com (thanks) and there are shares registering there.

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] What is: ‘meta robots advanced’ ‘site-wide default: none’ for?So, what it means when it says:
‘Site-wide default: none’
It means that no non-default settings have been made?
The site-wide default in a new WP installation is that no robots settings are made other than the default, which is Index, and Follow Links.
This reminds me of visible/non-visible ‘eye’ icons!

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] In > Search Appearance > Taxonomies, What is ‘Format’ for?Hi Marius,
I’ll read up on Formats to see what they’re for. Thanks for the links and the help,
JohnHi Devnihil,
Thanks for the response!A. No, I’m not using anything but the standard, simple off-the-shelf editor in WordPress.
I’ve also just checked how much text is in the resulting HTML—in the browser, because I’ve noticed in the past that WP can’t throw in a LOT of extra code. But no, it looks clean and there’s nothing more than about 140 words even with P tags etc. (using WordPress’ system for cacheing images on their own server creates a lot of giberish code. I won’t use it on this site).
However… I’ve just tried removing the Jetpack portfolio shortcode, and now the word-count is accurate. Yoast usually seems to instantly detect (impressive!) the difference even without saving the file, but not always. So that’s the issue on this page. I’ll test the wordcount now on a simple page with nothing but text.
https://johnwhiteillustrator.com/yoast-word-count-test/
It’s working perfectly, and also detecting the long-tail keyword ‘word count’ everywhere that it should. Nice job.2. Regarding the long-tail keyword: Is it really critically important to search engines that the word-order is the same everywhere in the page? Google, I think, has said before that the perfectly optimised page will probably be penalised, because the amount of optimisation could look cycnically strategically contrived in order to trick them. I’ve heard that because their algorythm is so intelligent now, that synonymns and variations on keywords can actually be a good idea.
As for where I said in my original post, that Yoast wasn’t detecting a keyword that definitely is in the 1st paragraph ‘editorial illustration’ — it seems that that is due to those 2 words not appearing together in the same order.
Thanks ??

In reply to: ‘/wordpress’ — Google search console — dead linksWEIRD RE-DIRECT
It’s very strange how some of the pages that Google has crawl errors for, direct to URLs with a missing / in them:(…)white.comillustration(…)
For example, the following sort of URL is listed with a crawl error because it’s from the old site, which is fair enough:
https://johnwhiteillustrator.com/dredd.shtml
but when it’s clicked in Search Console, it tries to go to:
https://johnwhiteillustrator.comdredd.shtmlNote the missing / after .com
It’s bizarre. I have no incorrect re-directs like that in my .htaccess file.
I’ve now created a 301 Redirect from
https://johnwhiteillustrator.com/dredd.shtml
to
the correct new page, and requested removal of both of the following from Google’s index:
https://johnwhiteillustrator.com/dredd.shtml
https://johnwhiteillustrator.comdredd.shtmlI wonder what caused this? Some sort of mis-configuration of the new WordPress site, by me, or my host? If so, I hope it was temporary!

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] In the ‘content optimisation’ tab, what’s the ‘Slug’ field for?OK, so it’s the last seo-friendly bit of the url after the slash.
It’s interlinked with the ‘permalink’ function at the top of the posts and pages editor, each affects the other when you edit them.
Thanks Md,

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] In > Search Appearance > Taxonomies, What is ‘Format’ for? Thanks Md.
I’m afraid I sometimes need example visuals so I can see what something actually does.So I still have no idea what it means or looks like.
But it’s good to know that it doesn’t affect the sitemap——and presumably the SEO?

You’re doing good work here. What does the wording in that field actually mean, though?

In reply to: ‘/wordpress’ — Google search console — dead linksOh, ok!
(you wouldn’t think I’d worked as a designer in web dev for 17 years)That’s good to know. I bet the dev site was exposed then.
Thanks Steve,

In reply to: ‘/wordpress’ — Google search console — dead linksHi Steve,
Thanks for your time and help.
The visible/dev explanation seemed like a good one to me too, but no, it was hidden—or at least I thought it was. I could be wrong. Can bots find sites even if they’re not linked to by anything else?
Here’s the current sitemap/s. No ‘wordpress’ in any of the URLs.
Maybe the Jetpack sitemap that was generated first included ‘/wordpress’ (for God knows what reason) and even though I since switched to a Yoast generated one and submitted it, it’ll take a while for Google to update itself?
I’ll do a re-submission once I think it looks correct.

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] ‘noindex’ search console issueHi Md,
– Re: Re-direct: The funny thing is, when I changed the ‘stub’ via YOAST, the SEO title also automatically changed. So I imagine the only way that WordPress can allow everything to keep linking up (in-bouns, and external) is for it (not necessarily Yoast) to create a re-direct.
– I need to find out what ‘taxonomies’ and ‘content types’ actually are. I’ll research further.
– Yes, I followed your advice and Fetched as Google yesterday, thanks. All now marked as ‘pending.’
– I’ll start a new thread as requested.I donm’t know what I can do about the 150+ pages that are supposedly a problem in search console, as I have no way of finding out what they are.
Thanks for the continued assistance, gents ??

In reply to: [Yoast SEO] ‘noindex’ search console issueSorry, back again.
I just looked in ‘YOAST > SEO > Search Appearance’ again. I saw this.Show Format in search results?
NoThis is weird because I’m convinced that every time I’ve checked those settings, all of them were set to enabled, show, or yes.
Is this the problem? along with the aforementioned:
‘Meta Robots Advanced’:
‘Sitewide Default, none.
