Yes, we take down the quality of these files quite a bit.

Would a solution be to set it so WordPress does not compress the images?
Or will this not make a difference.

An example:

2510 x 1790 original version = 208kb
837×597 version = 69kb
837×597@x2 version = 771kb

how can this image that is smaller in dimensions exceed the much larger original version?

Does the referrer match the request exactly? If so, it will redirect. I would imagine your referrer doesn’t match.

So the whole url needs to be added to the referer?
https://www.example.co.uk?

Note that referrer information may not be sent by a browser.

So it might be that one browser picks the referrer info and another one not?
Might be a bit unreliable to use this option then.

Do you perhaps have a .htaccess line that could do this for me?
I’ve been looking around for this but I haven’t found a working code for this matter.
