  • Thanks again Otto42.

I added define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false); to wp-config.php and turned off the “Use Google Libraries” plugin. WP still functioned correctly.
After I removed the abovementioned line again the errors were back.

So IMHO, script concatenation is a candidate for some extra attention from the developers.

As it is, I am glad the problems are solved and I am not solely dependent on Googles libraries.

Thanks Otto42, things are working again as they should. I followed the instructions in your link as far as I could. Steps 1 and 2, step 3 not (could not find Google Gears in my browsers plugins), 4 not (I had uploaded the files already a couple of times to differen blogs).

After downloading and activating “Use Google Libraries” the problems were gone. (B.t.w. downloading was not possible from the search plugins field in the Admin area because this feature was also in-operable.)

For the time being I am happy with this solution altough I think WordPress should also work without the “Use Google Libraries” plugin. IMHO this is an additional dependancy and updating could become more cumbersome in future releases.

Can I switch off the script concatenation features in WP?

I just installed a fresh 2.8.1 Worpress from scratch. Language English.

Same behaviour: I cannot manage Widgets and the “Screen Options” button (as well as the “Help” button) does not work.

There are no extra plugins installed and the 2 default plugins (Akismet and Hello Dolly) are not activated.

Automatic upgrade 2.7.1 -> 2.8.1 finished with a success message.
Website seems ok when viewed as user.

However, as administrator, I cannot manage the Widgets (dutch language enabled: Weergave – Widgets. In English, I guess: Appearance – Widgets).

I cannot open the used Widgets for editing nor can I drag them (altough the usual four-arrow-cross appears when hovering over an installed widget).

Furthermore the “Scherm” (english: “Screen”) drop-down box at the upper right is dead.
