Thankm you for your response. I apologize if I have directed my observations to the wrong page – as I said i have developed respect for your product over deveral years and it was not my intention to downplay that – I hope I made that clear.

Like everyon else I am in haste to get things done, so I put another cache solution on that site and a day later it has settled to 83,000 files – around 140,000 less than before. I accept that I may have applied wrong settings but as I said, I have used for several years and seen no indicator of this type. I will read your recommendations more closely next time although I do always select appropriately on your wizard (or so I thought).

I have experienced exactly this issue: Try to save WP menu and you get a 404 error. The ‘customize’ facility works on the menu but does not ahve the features I needed to set conditional menu display.

I tried disabling all plugins, changing theme etc – all to no avail.

In the end I solved this by temporarily suspending Mod_Sec Security on the domain on my VPS server. This worked first time – perfectly. I then reenabled Mod_Sec.

If you have shared hosting you will probably need to ask your hosting provider to assist you although some CPanels do have the option.

Always ALWAYS re-enable security once done. I have no idea why this problem arises so just regard this as a ‘way around it’ for now.

Hope that helps someone because this is a really irritating, time-consuming , niggly issue.

I respectfully disagree. Every indication was that it was woocommerce (well, 80% probable in my opinion – we can never be certain!). The main difference in the last test was that a new Woo DB was installed. Still, I sincerely thank you for your professional and kind help – it helped my thinking processes a lot and made me a little bit more competent – every day we learn!
This is the first time I have used Woocommerce support here and I must compliment you greatly for the standard of support you provide- technically excellent, fast and very understanding. Thank you.

Hi there.
I moved the site to my VPS server for more control. This helped when I needed to restart the mySql processes at the root.

previously I had already tries to run the DB update processes one by one and the site had always frozen.

This time, there was a new Woocommerce database update available so i ran that first. Then, with the CRON still disabled I ran them one at a time again and this time each one ran without a problem – all 26 of them. So I have reenables cron again and the site seems stable as i work on it.
So far so good.

One question before I go ahead – should I leave CRON enables or disabled?
Also, i have to tell you that I have tried running manually before and the result was the same – freeze. bt of course I will try again exactly as you require – just need to know if CRON must be enabled. I know it’s for scheduled tasks, but given the site is not connected to a domain, I don’t know how this is handled.

I am just moving the site to a VPS so that I can restart the SQL processes when I need to. Right now it’s on shared hosting and I cannot do that. Once moved I will then do the test as you have kindly provided. Thank you so much and I should be back to you in less than a day

I deactivated everything except Woocommerce.
I loaded the Store theme
I ran the DB update but nothing happened
I re-enabled CRON
The site froze again.
I disabled woocommerce from CPanel
the site unfroze
I reactivated all plugins
Critical error
I disabled CRON and tried again – still critical error
I disabled all related woocommserce plugins. Site returned
I re-enabled woocommerce – site frozen
I disabled woocommerce – site unfrozen
FYI I already tried reinstalling woocommerce as well as rolling it back to previous versions – same result.

I deactivated all other plugins and then reactivated woocommerce
the site froze again
I disabled woocommerce in CPanel – site returned.
I made couble sure I had only the defaut atore theme annd no other plugins active and reactivated woocommerce – the site froze again.

Thanks for your help – much needed right now

Thank you so much for your reply; I very much appreciate your honest and concise response. If I was running your development team I would also do a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether or not such backwards compatibility is worthwhile.

My problem (which is not your problem!) is making sure that when I state that our websites work on mobiles, I don’t mislead anyone.

PS: In 2017, 63% of all iPhones ever sold were still in use.

Love your product and fantastic support and I shall have no reservation in re-selling it on customer websites with the caveat of informing customers of the old technology restrictions.

More info:
T+When i backed up the database from a working version i.e. a version that would still crash when the database update completed items but which worked with woocommerce active, the database copy did NOT clear the problem when restored.
So I used another tool to back up the database excluding action scheduler items a nd restored the database. That seems more stable, but the database is updating the database in the background and kit never stops. Remember we are using a hosts file to access the site so it will not resolve for a normal site connection. IU suspect that this is causing the issue. As long as I don’t activate or run or go to look at the database updates the site seems stable now and I heve restored the database twice to test.
