Beta release is currently due for October: https://vanillaforums.org/discussion/comment/167997/#Comment_167997
Actually, it’s free.
If you want it free, you just have to host it yourself.
You only pay if you want them to save you trouble and provide; hosting, backups, plugins etc…
Pretty awesome offer, and more than fair and reasonable.
I’ve been using Plugin Central for years and it’s never put a link in the footers of my sites.
I just double checked with a fresh install, and still no footer link.
Perhaps you’re seeing a footer link from a different plugin, one that you used Plugin Central to install?
Thanks dennis_f, you were right that was the issue. I repackaged the items I was testing with and they worked.
For the most part, there is no need to manually upload a plugin that comes from the repository, as obviously you would typically just use the direct installation process instead.
However there are many thousands of themes and plugins that, for various and completely valid reasons, don’t reside in the repository. Or, that do reside in the repository but perhaps also directly from the creator’s website. Both of these cases were true in the items I was testing with.
In the past, if an archive did not have a containing folder inside, WordPress would still just extract into a folder of the same name as the zip file.
Could this not still be the case given that the resulting installations work just fine as long as all the actual functional files are in order?
Otherwise, there will be a whole lot of headaches out there for folks seeing the type of message I saw, with no way to know it was something as simple as a folder being missing.
Sure, it may be “wrong” to have a missing folder.
But if forcing it to be “right” causes an increase in malfunctions and issues for users, where working around it being “wrong” allows things to hum along smoothly for the most part, then perhaps a workaround actually leads to best practical results.

In reply to: [The Website Weaver] Not workingI have taken on board your suggestion in the other thread regarding the ability to read posts. I only would have hoped that they could have come in a kinder, less accusatory manner, given I’m already doing my utmost to share with and support the community.
I hope you enjoy the update when I am able to make the time to complete it and get it out on the repository.

In reply to: [The Website Weaver] [Plugin: The Website Weaver] An Awesome PluginExcuse me Flub UK, but while yes this is my partner as is obvious by our shared surname, every word is true.
I am the programmer of this plugin and created it from the ground up single handedly. Daz is a designer. I am a designer and coder. Once I finished the plugin he began to use it in his work. Where before he was confined to graphic design only, he is now able to create complete WP themes without my assistance coding.
We decided to gift this plugin to the community despite many months of hard work creating it. A little bit of gratitude rather than flaming would not be uncalled for.
Many people have most graciously thanked us for sharing our work and making it possible for them to save huge amounts of money on theme creation. Those are the people who make having given this plugin away worthwhile.
Hi Flub UK,
Thanks for your suggestions, we’ll take them under consideration.

In reply to: [The Website Weaver] Not workingHi Flub UK,
There is actually an update on the way out to fix this issue.
The kind folks who didn’t mind giving us a very small amount of money to cover the time we otherwise could not afford to spend giving them support alerted us to the issue.
Thanks to those kind folks and their generosity, it has been fixed and that update will soon be made freely available to all the others who are freely enjoying the benefits of our many months of hard work.
All the best,
– Kezz

In reply to: Adding shortcode outside loops if function existsThanks for the snippet! I’m using this in a theme designed to work with a specific plugin for a client, very helpful. ??
