  • Sounds like we’re suffering the same problems. Setup up your tickets and it will spontaneously stop working while on sale and the only way to fix it is to start over from scratch.
This is a known bug with their ticketing system and they wont fix it, they just blame other plugins or your host.

Please contact the developers of the plugins you are having issue with. You can also write a review on plugin’s page about your experience with it.

Well, indeed. But, this suggestion misses the point. This post is about WordPress devs addressing this very widespread problem. I could give reviews and contact the plugin authors, but they aren’t going to respond to that criticism if they think it is OK to do this in the first place. They will ignore it, not to mention, it would only be a drop in the bucket of all the plugins who abuse this privilege.

It’s up to WordPress to establish best practices and limits to the experience of WordPress.

Is there a way to display information from custom fields on the front end with the shortcodes or widgets?

I figured it out. Of course, as always, I tend to stumble upon the cause after spending hours troubleshooting, and another hour writing a detailed help post ??
The issue is from the “General” tab of the Directory Builder.
In my testing, before I had discovered the “never expire” checkbox on the listing editor, I set the Expiration setting in the Directory Builder to “999999999999999999” because I didn’t want my listings to expire.
    Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/mQXipEX.png
This causes a problem with the plugin, and setting it to a more reasonable value like “50” makes the problem go away and Directorist works fine again.
I knew that this must have been something to do with a setting because the plugin worked fine for a long time before I poked around and changed settings.
I didn’t get any error message or anything when setting the Expiration field to “9999999999999” – perhaps in a future update you can set that field to a maximum value and/or add a invalid number error message.

Thank you for the help. I did not realize there were custom widget area for single listing page, or that custom single listing page directions. I appreciate the help.

    FOUND IT.
THis is the setting in AIOS that causes the issue:
    Under Firewall>Additional Firewall Rules:

Since this warns that some plugins may break with this setting, it may not be a bug or anything but maybe it will help you.

    Hi Ironikus,
Thank you for your kind reply and update. I recognize now I should have posted here before I reviewed negatively, and I will give it another chance and I have changed my review. I also appreciate your willingness to help when I clearly screwed up. Your plugin is really important and was previously well made. I think the alternatives are sub-par compared to yours.

First, I reinstalled your plugin and I see that the “visit us” link and your name now appears as the developer. It was different before and lead to “Ironikus.com” which redirects to WP-Webhooks.com which didn’t seem to have anything to do with the plugin. So it was suspicious to me. (Now I know your name, I see you’re the founder ??)

I’m not sure how, but when I did the troubleshooting of deactivating plugins and testing, I missed the very one that was causing this problem. I can’t explain why it is doing this, but it’s very concerning.

The plugin conflict is All In One WP Security, which seems like a very legitimate and important plugin… I don’t know why it would cause this behavior – but it’s definitely this. I’ve disabled all of my plugins, except Email Encoder and All In One WP Security and the problem disappears when I deactivate AIOS… and reappears when I reactivate it.

Here’s what happens when it is active:

When clicking on the plugin “Settings” link my website is used to display a “parked” page with advertising. The URL is the proper settings page URL, but it displays a parked domain page using my domain: Screenshot

This same page appears in an iframe of the pop-up window that appears when you click the plugins “View details” link that normally loads the plugin’s wordpress.com/plugins listing.

When viewing the source code of the parked page, I see that my hosting company IONOS is involved… the parked page comes from them, but I don’t know why it appears
    1. Only on your plugin and
    2. Only when AIOS is enabled.

I did some further testing and it seems AIOS security settings is also causing the white screen when using the “activate” or “deactivate” links on plugins.

I’m hoping you have some clues to what’s happening behind the scenes? If nothing else, at least I have a work around (disable AIOS) when I need to manage Email Encoder’s settings)
I have restored the AIOS settings to default and enable them 1 by 1 until I figure out which setting is interfering and let you know which one it is.

Thanks for your patience and tolerance of my foolishness.

I’ve edited my review because I’ve been foolish. I’ll discuss this further with you in the forums. Thank you for your reply!

Thanks for your input bcworkz! I also suspected the same, but I’m always looking for ways to strengthen security – my business is a Travel Agency which deals with a great deal of personal information so I want to protect it the best I can. I do already have 2FA on, and login limiters, and a firewall, and more… so I’m probably fine… but thought I’d ask.

Thank you for your response. The Foobox settings are clear. You can only choose “Title” or “Alt” text as a FooBox caption. There is no option to display the media’s actual caption data as the FooBox caption. The only options are:

    • Default – img[title], img[alt], img[data-title], img[data-alt]
    • Anchor or Image – a[title], a[data-title], img[title], img[alt], img[data-title], img[data-alt]
    • Image Title Only – img[title], img[data-title]
    • Image Alt Only (NextGen title field) – img[alt], img[data-alt]
    • Anchor Title Only – a[title], a[data-title]
    • None

You don’t need a link to my website to test anything. It’s a design question. There should be an option to pull the media’s caption for the CAPTION.

Hmm. I’m fairly certain I was on the latest free version at the time, but I am now upgraded to the lifetime pro version so I’m not sure. Let me save my current config and try again to see what happens.

Thanks for the quick reply! It happened more than once before I figured out what was causing it, so I don’t know which emoji’s exactly, but I’m pretty sure the last couple times it was ?? and/or ??

“I’d like to add important context to some of the allegations you’ve made from our perspective.” Nope – not necessary and responses like this, that largely deny issues, state that others are happy, and blame the client for not wanting to help resolve clear and serious issues with your software, are inappropriate and only highlight the problems in the mentality of your company.

And it’s completely false that I did not contact you. I opened multiple support tickets and received nothing but “help us troubleshoot” – Your software needs to work out of the box – almost no customer who is embarking on a large-scale fundraiser will have the time or responsibility of helping you resolve issues with your software while there is a campaign supposed to be happening. Further, it is impossible for you to review my support history as you have no idea who I am. My information here should not give you any indication of which customer I am.

My point still stands: It is not appropriate to expect customers who pay hundreds of dollars for your software to be your QA team. The price you charge, your software should not be riddled with serious problems like it is and should work almost perfectly out of the box. Your tone-deaf, “its not us, it’s you.” response only reveals how you think about your customers and highlights how you treat the relationship with people who pay you. Do better.

What’s shocking is that there’s no way for a user to change their password without accessing their profile on the un-themed back-end dashboard of WordPress, (unless I’m missing a front-end profile somewhere, but don’t think I am) where they also see all kinds of alerts from plugins and things that they shouldn’t see or have access to. That doesn’t make any sense at all.

But what I was really saying I was shocked about is that I didn’t notice this problem for almost a decade of working with WordPress.

I will try to come back here and help troubleshoot if I can get migrated to another host anytime soon. I host with 1and1.com and they’ve turned out to be awful, and there’s many examples like this where I am not allowed to access any error logs or what not.

I really like the potential of your plugin, but I needed to get setup for a client this week.
