I’m already using the twenty-seven theme so it was just a matter of deactivating and reactivating all my plugins. The culprit is (drum roll please) Jetpack. I think my problems began when I tried to get VideoPress to work. But even with it showing as inactive with no associated plug-in. It seems to be having an effect. I hate to deactivate Jetpack. I think I’m paying for VaultPress to create backups…

If you define “play properly” to mean play on my web page then you are correct that clicking on the big red button in the middle causes the video to play properly.

However, if one clicks on the “Watch on YouTube” button in the lower left, I would want YouTube to launch and the video to play in the YouTube interface. In that sense it doesn’t play properly, it generates an error.

No, I don’t know enough to customize the embed. I just paste the YouTube video URL directly into the WYSIWG page. What you see is what I see when I paste the URL.
