The error message said it couldn’t create the classes directory. I opened a ticket and was told it was a permissions problem. I looked at permissions and my hosting company did as well, and permissions were fine. I opened the ticket again and Formidable said it was the length of the file name and not their fault, do a manual update instead (but the process for a manual update isn’t documented). I DID open a ticket twice and no one seemed very happy to help.
