This has been an issue before and as far as I know there have been some fairly complicated fixes to the issue requiring editing the function.php file.
This was my extremely simple work around.
I created an event for the day before the very first event in the calendar and titled it “Schedule” (whatever you want the calendar grid view to show) Then I checked the ‘Hide from events listing’ and made it an all day event. Click ‘Update’ and Voila!
