I installed Twenty Sixteen and the External Image does appear there in Live Preview. It still does not appear with the active Virtue – Premium theme. So, I had to switch the theme on the original example site I noted in my first comment. However, I do have the Virtue Theme activated here (also WP 4.7.1), with the same issue with External Image not displaying on posts (but does display on index page):Post not displaying External Featured Image:
