In reply to: Allow duplicate category slugs when “child of parent”Anyone? The dash can’t become the new slash for defining website structures.

In reply to: prevent post slug from adding -2,-3,etc… on same titleYes I can see that aspect of it, but that’s not really what I’m saying. I’m actually backing up the theory that two different posts cannot and should not have the same slug or permalink, my example is highlighting one post slug and the slight lack of context of category structures sometimes.
And if they were two stories in different categories with the same name, when moving the posts in and out of categories there could be a way of automatically rechecking the slug to make it unique again.

In reply to: prevent post slug from adding -2,-3,etc… on same titleThere does seem to be a bad flaw with how the permalink structure works, I assume it’s just looking at the post slug and matching that and not even reading that its in a category. If the permalink took account of its context rather than just matching on the last string in the URL, we wouldn’t need to nave unique slugs.
category1/story-slug and
category2/story-slugshould bring back the same post because a post should be able to co-exist in multiple categories, and that’s the reason for needing a unique post slug. Be nice if it was more context aware though.

In reply to: Categories ID/Slug – Huge issues! There is hope. Why not move categories out of the terms table or something similar? You wouldn’t want duplicate tags, but you should expect to have duplicate category names and it’s this database design flaw which is at fault. They seem to have mixed up tags and categories and have said you can only ever have one category called “cars” for example.
It totally screws up any attempt and I do mean any decent attempt at information architecture when you move beyond a blog.
Each child of each parent should be allowed to take the same name as their peers (which IS allowed in WP, but the slug isn’t allowed to behave the same), you have multiple friends in the real world who have the same name from different parents. It’s this clash between how the slug and the category name are handled that’s causing me the headache.

In reply to: Bug: Cannot have duplicate category and tag slugsI’m having the same problem.
It seems even if you use parent categories ie are building a good structure or taxonomy you still can’t have multiple duplicate children, even if the children are from “different parents” and that’s a key point here, different parents. It’s like saying there’s only ever going to be one Tom one Dick and one Harry in the world EVER no more no less. Hardly flexible, when you look at the real world I know multiple Sarah’s who’ve come from different parents and I can tell the difference between them fine ??
