In your cases, simple optimization will not work.
I think you see the total amount of your storage on the server. Try to select all the files in the thumbs folder and just look at their total size

As far as I see, the examples you cited are two different modules – AlbumsList and AlbumsList Masonry.
You need to create a gallery using the AlbumsList module.
