Ron,
I do not have a Network Admin -> Settings menu.
I’ve looked from my main domain’s wp-admin, and from a mapped domain’s wp-adminI do have subdomains, and WordPress installed in subdomain mode.
I have several sites set up.
I have old sites where I mapped (e.g. https://lcblog.lernerconsult.com ) but can not map new domains.Ron,
The readme.txt mentions “Tools->Domain Mapping where they can add or delete domains.”
I don’t have that menu any more.
There used to be a screen for doing the actual mapping (once I have added a domain in WordPress, which blogs do I want mapped to it). I can’t find that screen now.
The blogs that I mapped before are still working, but I can’t map a new blog.
I have My Sites, Network Admin, Dashboard (https://lernerconsulting.info/wp-admin/network/)
from there, Settings, Domain Mapping, Domain Options
from there, Settings, DomainsBut where do I say to map a single blog to a domain I put in Domains?

In reply to: Login Reauth Redirect on SubdomainsWeb Studio, I’m not clear, what did you do that worked? I have the dev version of the plugin, 1/7/2012, and get the login loop you had.

In reply to: WordPress 3.0 and Domain Mapping@cinematic, Can’t tell if you’ve done this: GoDaddy can be the registrar for the domain, but the GoDaddy Nameserver records should be pointing to your “another hoster”, You’ll probably need to talk to AnotherHoster tech support to find out what info to give GoDaddy, and have them (AnotherHoster) point the domain name at your account.
Try setting up WildCard DNS through CPanel, instead of changing CNAME settings (see Wildcard DNS on a Shared Hosting Account ). Does the same thing, but you don’t have to wait on tech support.
On many (all? most? at least mine!) CPanel hosting accounts each parked domain lives as a folder off of public_html. If you try to create https://chess.games.mydomain.com, it will be in the public_html/chess folder (not the public_html/games/chess folder). That affects how you should configure any redirects.

In reply to: WordPress 3 subdomain installation@andrea_r Maybe WordPress will make instructions for web hosting companies?
None of the techs at my web hosting provider had done anything with WPMU, even though it’s a good hosting company. A few couldn’t understand that the new version might possibly need different setup…
- How to configure WordPress 3 for customers
- Advantages of starting new accounts with web sites not in public_html
- How to move web sites out of public_html, so public_html is for WordPress multi-site.

In reply to: WordPress 3 subdomain installation@ipstenu: I don’t understand. Yes, I am talking about installing WordPress 3 on my web hosting account. Are you saying you install both a web site and WordPress, both in public_html? I’d have to at least make my web site not have an index.php, since WordPress uses that.
Usually I’d want to keep major applications in their own folder, easier to update, less confusion “Is this file part of my web site, or of one of these big applications?”.
Certainly less work than moving a big existing web site out of public_html, though…

In reply to: Categories and ImportSeems I had Tag with slug “real-estate”, so can’t have Category with that same slug. Same with Tag internet-marketing, can’t have Category with same slug.
Still, probably a bug in 3.0 Importer, that the conversion added different numbers to the slug.
Is there a way to use SQL or a plug-in, to merge Categories (both the category list, and have the posts be updated to use the merged category)?
Forum: Alpha/Beta/RC
In reply to: Categories and ImportI exported from 2.92, imported into 3.0.
Categories didn’t all come across properlyHow do I merge categories, so posts reference the same category, of those with the same name?
For example, Category “Internet Marketing” imported with slugs internetmktg, internet-marketing-2, internet-marketing-3, internet-marketing-4, internet-marketing-4
“Real estate” imported with slugs realestate, real-estate-2, real-estate-3, real-estate-4, real-estate-5
However, not all 2-word categories imported wrong, Small Business imported correctly, with multiple posts using it.
Perhaps problem was where I manually changed the slug, so instead of a name “Real Estate” and slug real-estate, I’d used realestate?
Whatever the cause, how do I have posts reference one Category?

In reply to: WordPress 3 subdomain installationTo put it in most basic terms:
Move lernerconsult.com from public_html to an add-on domain, located in public_html/lernerconsulting
Then move the WordPress files from wordpress.lernerconsult.com (public_html/wordpress) to public_html, and point a new domain name (e.g. lernerconsulting.info) to there.
I also had to go into phpMyAdmin to replace all the occurrences of wordpress.lernerconsult.com with lernerconsulting.info (I had done enough configuring plug-ins to make it worth while, instead of re-installing).
Now multi-site is working (after the DNS changes had propagated through the Internet).
Grrr, there are a lot of people who have their hosting account set up with mydomain.com in public_html. Do all these people have to move their web site to an add-on domain, to have WP3 multi-site work?
I am making a WordPress 3.0 post on exactly what I did, on https://lcblog.lernerconsult.com/

In reply to: WordPress 3 subdomain installationOn my host (LunarPages, and I’ve seen the same on other hosts), all subdomains are created in public_html.
So, https://www.glerner.com is in public_html/glerner, movies.glerner.com would be in public_html/movies, etc.
I have installed WordPress 3.0 (RC3) in public_html/wordpress, as https://wordpress.glerner.com
No error messages setting up WordPress, configuring Networks, or adding a site.
When I try to Update my network, I get errors like this:
* https://opera.wordpress.glerner.com
Warning! Problem updating https://opera.wordpress.glerner.com. Your server may not be able to connect to sites running on it. Error message: Couldn’t resolve host ‘opera.wordpress.glerner.com’
Is there a way around this? Or must WordPress 3 be installed in public_html, with a new domain name to access it?
