I haven’t had the problem since deactivating iThemes Security, so there doesn’t seem much doubt that it was the culprit.

Fortunately I have got a long password, with plenty of arbitrary characters in it.

It is difficult to be sure, because the fault is intermittent, by impression is that iThemes Security is the culprit.

Well depending upon the hosting company it might not be exactly the same for other people, but:

    1.) I went to cpanel
2.) Under databases I clicked on phpMyAdmin
3.) In the left hand column I clicked on the name of the database
4.) Again in the lefthand column I clicked on wp-options
5.) Then I went to the variable enable_app, which in my case was on page 3
6.) I clicked the pencil icon
7.) Near to where it says “option value” there will be a large rectangle with a zero in it
8.) Change that to a one.
    9.) Click go.
10.) Make sure the value has changed in the table
    11.) If not try again.

Well I have uploaded all of the WordPress files again, but:

1.) if I type in /wp-admin I get told there is no wp-login.php file on the server, even though I can see it in the site’s root directory.

2.) If I try to use /wp-login directly, a screen which looks as though it is missing its style sheet comes up. I try to login anyway, only once again to be told that there is no wp-login.php file on this server.

    UPDATE:
I only have four posts so fsr, so I cut and pasted them out of WordPress, and then deleted them. I changed the Permalinks back to the default. cut and pasted the posts back in, and now most of the broken links seem to be working. However, with RSS, I am now getting a different error message:

“This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below”

Followed by a lot of XML code.

Yes, I have published a number of posts. However, I have now discovered a number of other internal links which do not seem to be working.

I set up “friendly” permalinks BEFORE making any posts. I have never used them in previous WordPress installations, and I have never had this problem before. Coincidence?
