In reply to: images can’t be uploaded ?props to my hosting service (hostingmatters.com) for graciously fixing all the codes to the correct, working ones! I am ready to tweak my theme and tackle migration of the old blog. yeah!

In reply to: images can’t be uploaded ?after many attempts myself (with error 500 msgsgalore), my hosting service kindly created the .htaccess file myself and voila, it works, and my permalinks are finally set!!
no success yet with the images, but i am finally 1 step closer. (a great way to start a monday!)

In reply to: images can’t be uploaded ?SS – I tried that full path and that didn’t work either. Also tried it in the box underneath “store uploads” that says “full path” and that didn’t work either.
Generous – my wp-content/uploads folder already has 777.
I wonder if this goes back to my problems with the .htaccess file? there wasn’t one generated for me when I installed WP and I think that has caused me problems when customizing my permalinks. (whenever i add that file, i get an error 500 msg, with no access to my site or the wp-admin page.) I haven’t had any luck resolving that problem yet.

In reply to: .htaccess – Subdomain Rewrite Rulemarein –
unfort you are not alone! if i have the .htaccess file in my directory, i get the 500 error. when i take it out, the site comes up, but i can’t do much (upload pics, change permalinks, etc).i wish i had the answer, but not yet. i’m searching though…
much luck to you!Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: that pesky .htaccess file = big headache!well whatyaknow… so sooner did I post that when I found a button and the box to enter in permission codes! I entered “666” to my index.php file. However, once I add that .htaccess file (again, with permissions set to 666), error 500 msgs pop up and I can’t access my site, nor the admin page.
I think I’ve exhausted your knowledge/recommendations…
Hoping someone else might have an idea?Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: that pesky .htaccess file = big headache! Thanks CJ. I’ve read that page now, but to be honest, get a bit lost! I don’t see how to change permissions from within my ftp client (Fetch). I can see how to do it to a file on my desktop (which I could then upload), although the dialog box on my Mac looks quite diff than that shown in example. No place for entering numbers; just assigning read/write. I am thinking I am not in the right spot!
So far, I’ve only tried modifying the index.php file. If only I could find that number box…

In reply to: migrating from Blogger to WP, on my own domainI agree – the forced move is good, but still frustrating!
I have not migrated info over, nor do I feel I have “the easiest” answer yet. (Right now, the leading method seems to be convert my self-hosted/ftp site to a blogspot site, THEN use the WP import tool.)
Meanwhile, I do have WP set up and running, but there are a few problems I’m trying to overcome first that may cause problems during migration. (Can’t get .htaccess & permissions working correctly! – any experts reading this and have pointers?!)
To answer some of your other questions:
I’m keeping the same URL, although the exact page my blog is on will be changing. but I do have WP saved in the main/root directory of that URL. My data will remain in the same directory, although different folders I’d presume?Best of luck! Do let me know once you dive into it and how it goes; I’ll do the same. hoping it’s a productive weekend ??

In reply to: migrating from Blogger to WP, on my own domainmercime – thanks for your tips. The future “unsupport” of ftp-based blogs is precisely why I am migrating over. I am using this (forced) opportunity to update the look of things, so I don’t have to worry about my old blogger theme. (although I have backed it up just in case!)
I checked out your links. I’ll test out this method when i have a bit more time and a tad less frustration ??

In reply to: that pesky .htaccess file = big headache!ah, very interesting! I changed the permalinks to default and the other pages now work! However, when I added the blank .htaccess file, once again the 500 error msg appear.
Where are the file permissions located that you mention?
thank you for helping me get the other pages to appear!

In reply to: migrating from Blogger to WP, on my own domainThanks! I have things underway. 2 hiccups:
– .htaccess file issues (going to start a separate post regarding this pesky file!)
– my previous blog was ftp-based… So, when I go into WP-Admin import tool, this warning comes up:
To use this importer, you must have a Google account and an upgraded (New, was Beta) blog hosted on blogspot.com or a custom domain (not FTP).
eek! Hmm… I,m thinking I might have to actually convert my ftp blog to a blogspot one, THEN use the import? I’m not sure if this is the easiest option, or creates unncessary work.
An advice?
Thx!
