So I think I’ve figured this out, though I’m still not sure the cause of the original behavior. Posting my fix here in case any one runs into a similar problem. I added the following to my CSS file (.footnotes li):
list-style-type: decimal;

Thanks, Tara. I’m running a “child” theme based on “Minimaliste,” and this does seem to be where the problem lies. When I switch over to “Twenty Sixteen” the problem goes away. I’ll try contacting the theme’s developer and post back once I get this solved. In the meantime, any idea what this particular error message might refer to?
