Let’s just go back to the original problem: excluding posts from the blog page.

Is that doable? Isn’t that what you created the code for? Is it supposed to work on its own or am I supposed to do something now?

I can’t believe that this is a problem too big to solve on this forum—the wordpress support forum for gawd’s sake!— and I need to see this through to the end.

If I knew php I could look through the code, debug it, and see what’s what, but I don’t. Do you? You’re the one who wrote it! What exactly is it supposed to do? Maybe if we get that understood, we can figure out just what it isn’t doing…

    Seriously??

You got me this far and I’ve done all this stuff and still don’t know how to exclude categories from a simple page that I intend to blog to??

I can’t believe that I just went along with everything you told me to do; I thought the wordpress forum was better than this…

You’re kidding, right? Post a job request at the site at wordpress?

I won’t be that gullible again. If the situation were reversed I would have given you help right to the end, and then some…

thanks for what you’ve done so far, in any case…..(I guess I’m a bit naive when it comes to templates—–programming I know, templates in WordPress, not so much…)

    okay…done.

    Now what?

After uploading and activating your code I lost my background image (which I reloaded) and lost “home” on my menu and can’t figure out how to get it back…

    got it…did it…

    Now I’ve got it all in a folder that I created called “child_themes” (the three files I downloaded: blog-minus-cat.php, functions.php, & styles.css.

Where do I go from here? Do I need anymore folders/directories?

(Maybe I should have learned php after I learned c++…)

    Mac,
I couldn’t download the link you posted (it took me to your homepage instead…).

(btw I used to teach turbo pascal & visual basic at the college level and I even taught FORTRAN one day as a sub for a friend…)

Here’s the error msg I got: ‘No file paths defined. Go to homepage.”

I will check with her on this (not sure who her host is…)

    Thanks, again

Where and how do I create a child theme in Voyage theme? I don’t have a file manager so I can’t create new directories or folders on my site.

Thanks for taking the time to do this; I really appreciate it…

    Okay.
I’ve set the template to “Featured Blog” which shows all the posts.

Do you need to see it first before you write the code? (I can leave it like that but only for a short time because I don’t want people to see that page the way it is…)

    thanks!

    No, Vlxyzzy.

When the page is set to the “fullwidth template” it does not show all posts. When I set it to any blog template is when it shows all posts.

The point—and my question—was how to separate, exclude, posts that I don’t want to show on this page.

How can I make it a blog page, show posts on it, if I don’t change it to one of the blog templates? And THEN exclude certain posts, i.e., the slider posts.

Can you answer me that? If you can, then I will copy and create a child theme (but only if you can answer that question…)

    (@madcat11)

    Vlxyzzy,
When I first set up the site, months ago, I set up the page (in the regular way you set up any page in WordPress) identically to the way I set up all the other pages on the site.

Then I went into Pages>edit page>Page attributes and set up the template for that particular page to “featured blog” (I also tried the other templates: Blog (full posts), & Blog Summary/Portfolio) and in each case all of the posts came up on the screen even though they were of each category: Slider or Blogg so I went back and set the template to “fullwidth page” since if I set it up to the default template, the sidebar shows the widget I’ve setup to display her therapy session descriptions and also this 3-tabbed thing (categories, tags & archives) that’s now been pushed down between the page & the footer and I can’t get rid of it even if I delete all the sidebar references in the footer.php and page.php files.

In any case, the page works fine; it just shows ALL the posts no matter how I’ve set it up.

(are we still communicating “on the same page”?)

I have created a category called “sliders” and a category called “blogg” and a category called “other.” Now the question is how to keep my category “sliders” off of the page I want to dedicate to just blogging, a page entitled “Sandra’s Blog.” THAT was my original question but maybe I didn’t express it in the best way.

When I go to Appearance>customize there is no option for specific pages,, only
    Site Title and Tagline
    Colors
    Header image
    Background Image
    Navigation
    Static Front Page

    (@madcat11)

I created my page as an ordinary page, or, at least it is so far because whenever I set it up for blogging it puts all my posts on it and I don’t want that; I want to figure out how to separate categories of posts first and then I can make the page one dedicated to blogging.

I feel like we’re not speaking the same language here…

I just created the page, like you create all pages in WordPress and it doesn’t show as a blog yet because I haven’t be able to learn how to keep some posts out (sliders) and some posts in (blog posts)

I think that’s the problem: that I don’t have a static home page because I took advantage of the fact that I could just slip slides-—as posts—-into a slider “built into” the Voyage theme’s home page.

I could make my honepage static but then I’d have to download a plugin for a slider and that may be more trouble than I want get into. (although I will do it if I have to…)

In Admin>Settings>Reading my font page displays “my latest posts” and the only other choice I have is assigning other pages to post onto my front page/home page.

And let me repeat: I DON”T have a static home page. It has a slider that uses posts for the slides (that’s something that the Voyage theme allows).

    Am I missing something here?
