Hey all, just a little closure on this thread.
1) I was hoping the plug-in author might say (considering I have no other plug-ins, just the question on the lightbox one) “no problem, the updates from that system to current system have been fine now that we’ve worked the bugs out,” or “no, expect problems related to…” I don’t believe I was “demanding” of the author.
2) The realities that we work in are not as easy as “get new clients.” We’re competing with systems such as WIX and Squarespace (who advertised on the Superbowl) as well. Sometimes you can educate clients as to why going with WordPress is better and sometimes you can’t. I’ve already put a couple hours into the research. If I update for them, more time. There is a risk/benefit in every decision we make. I will certainly inform them of this and I use the analogies of car maintenance for this work, and car accident when a site gets hacked. They get it. But they sometimes “find” other alternatives that they think are less expensive and we don’t always get to participate in that decision.
Can we please close this thread? I marked it resolved two responses ago.
Thank you, your answer was actually helpful, as impolite as it was.
I think I will just wait until the customer needs more major work done. No-one wants to pay for this kind of behind the scenes stuff. I was hoping your answer would be more definitive.
Thanks Mike. That’s too much work; client would not likely want to pay for. Can one of the developers of NextGen answer this post please?

In reply to: PHP error notice when updating plug-ins since 3.7 updateI found that my tech had tightened up some things in our DNS server and the domain name was not resolving to make the FTP connection. In my 15 years working as a developer, the coincidence of something totally different than what’s anticipated being the culprit has happened many times.

In reply to: PHP error notice when updating plug-ins since 3.7 updateSeems more widespread than that. I get same error on dedicated server, but in /wp-admin/includes/plugin-install.php on line 77.
I found a way to may this work on a client’s site. In the Users, Edit User panel, make all the user Roles “No role for this site.” Then in the Tools Subscribers panel, edit the users’ Subscribed categories to Tech and Sales. They’ll get the notifications but can no longer login to change their own profiles or subscriptions. (Nice tool mattyrob. I wanted to read the latest support topics before adding this to another client site.)
Found my answer. 2 years ago “liveaverage” responded to someone else:
Are you using a theme with a sidebar widget (or that provides widget support)? If so, navigate to “Appearance” > “Widgets” > “Sidebar” > “Categories”. Expand the “Categories” menu and make sure “Show Hierarchy” IS checked. That should automatically add indention/nesting to your categories. IMO, this should be checked by default. In most themes with sidebar widgets, category is already inserted and if you don’t open it up you don’t see this. I’ll certainly remember in the future. This cost about 5 hours of searching.
