The sudden event that i figured out was that the server hosting my site went for some maintenance work so possibly some changes might have occurred in setting the configurations.
I solved the problem by first un-publishing the plugins and then
fixing the wp-config file as given in https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Editing_wp-config.php and then every thing was as good as before.
