Background info for others facing this issue. I installed WordPress Multisite where there were formally individual WordPress installs. (This means that there were already subdomains pointing to the appropriate subdirectory for a correct individual install.) After following all the tutorials out there, I was sure that my install was correct…and it was.
The one thing that I kept missing, even though the wildcard A record was in place…. There were existing subdomains that pointed to the subdirectory that needed to be changed. The wildcard couldn’t do it’s job because of the more specific subdomain pointing … A simple fix, but one that alluded me. Simply pointing them back to the public_html or root folder… fixed it all!
