No, I’m very sorry, I haven’t found a solution…
We “solved” this issue by setting up de website differently, and by using an extra plugin for the “special events” that would be in “an other eventscategory”
Sad, but true.

If you should ever find a solution, please post it!

Not sure if this topic has been resolved, I am working with the same issue:
I need two different single-event.php’s for two different single event displays. Is it possible to have a single-event.php per event-category?
