I should’ve googled a little more before posting. For anyone else with the same problem, this solution did the trick.

Just a simple calendar. My site is for a band, and I just want something where I can list upcoming shows.

Thanks, guys, I switched to FileZilla and was able to see the hidden file. Unfortunately after I made the changes described, P3 Plugin Profiler reported that the calendar plugin was actually slowing the site down MORE, so I guess it’s back to the drawing board. Thanks anyway for your help, though!

I just tried exactly what you described, luke314pi, and it deleted all my events. Now I have hours of work ahead of me entering everything in manually again. So for anyone else who comes across this thread, be sure you’re really willing to risk losing everything before you try it.

I’ve FTPed to my site and am looking at the files under [mydomainname].com. I don’t see anything that says .htaccess. Is it possible that this file either does not exist or that it might be located elsewhere? Sorry for so many questions, but I very much appreciate the help. This 1.10.11 version of the plugin is killing my site.

How can I downgrade to 1.10.9 without losing all my events? Can someone please talk me through this? I looked through all the plugin’s subfolders and couldn’t figure out where the actual events are being stored. Is there a way to back up my events, downgrade from 1.10.11 to 1.10.9, then restore my events?

Ooh, that’s way simpler than I was expecting it to be! Would these page-specific CSS elements all go in my child version of style.css?

If anyone else with a similar question stumbles onto this, I ended up (mostly) figuring it out following the general directions outlined here:

So I found this, which explains the basics of creating a custom template in a child theme:

Now all I really need to know is how to make a splash page that just has a big image with a link to the blog page. I don’t want it to show the header or anything else that all the other pages show — just the image.

For anyone who runs into this problem in the future, I found the solution myself in the comments to this tutorial, which is what I initially used to set it up.

The solution is here:

text-indent: -9000px

Put that in your CSS code under, for example, “.nav-facebook a” in my code above.

The version of IE that shows the labels is IE 8. It’s fine in IE 9.
