Thanks for the tip, barnez!
I think I fixed the problem. For anyone with similar trouble, here’s what happened. Though wordfence and sucuri showed no malware, I had changes in my .htaccess file that were redirecting everything to the “/enterprising-frankie.php” url. I restored the basic wordpress htaccess file and after that google could see the pages normally again. I deleted all the spammy urls from google search console manually, and then uploaded a new sitemap using yoast. I also asked google to reindex a few key pages, like the home page, immediately. Hope that’s helpful. Here was the most useful guide I found (even though I had a pharma hack, not a japanese keyword hack): https://www.interserver.net/tips/kb/how-to-fix-the-japanese-keyword-hack-in-wordpress/
Oh, and I still have the issue where the google search console can’t see or index any of the pages on the site, even though I can go to their urls. They all return 404 errors in the google search console.
Thank you so much, barnez! It’s so odd–if I actually copy the URL from google and paste it into the browser, I get the correct page, no problem. But if I actually click the link that google search has indexed, they all go to the URL /enterprising-frankie.php which no longer exists. for a 404 error. It’s like the malware tricked google into thinking that /enterprising-frankie.php is the correct link for all those urls. Was that how it was injecting the spam advertisements? So all I have to do is remove those urls? Will it find and re-index the correct urls, since those pages do exist? Should I submit a new sitemap? Really appreciate the help!
Thank you very much! I have been through that document and those steps during the initial cleaning of the malware, which was successful, at least according to Sucuri, but I’m at a loss about fixing these mystery php urls and 404 errors. Any specific advice much appreciated!

In reply to: [MC4WP: Mailchimp Top Bar] Parse error: syntax error: line 61I think the error was a result of using an outdated version of php on my host. Updated to php 5.3 and it worked.
