I manage a multisite network and encountered the same login problems.
I downgraded to 4.3.1: same problem.
I downgraded to 4.3: problem solved, can login again.
Member gzu told me the plugin More Privacy Options caused problems. So I updated the plugin to 4.1.1. And deleted te old files from /wp-content/mu-plugins/.
I just smoothly updated WordPress to 4.4.

Updating the plugin More Privacy Options to 4.1.1 and deleting the old version by FTP cleared the way to upgrade WordPress to 4.4.

Sounds good gzu! We use the plugin too. Next week (holiday for most users) I’ll give it a try.

Downgraded to 4.3. We are able to log in again.

Downgrading to 4.3.1 gives blank pages.

Deactivating the plugins and reinstalling 4.4 doesn’t help.

@ James: I see more reports about no more being able to log in. I mentioned mine in category MultiSite.

I have to say I’m kind of afraid to delete the original super admin….so much is tied to it.
I understand that the hacker is half way there if they have your user name, but in your opinion am I better off leaving it the way it is if I have strong passwords?

Yes, super strong passwords will help.
If you want to keep it this way consider a second account alongside your super admin account. Let it be an Editor with the same screen name that you already used. It gives you the possibility to change the owner of a article one by one the moment you chose.

When you delete a user you are asked to chose another user to link to the content of the user you are going to delete.
Try this with a temporary user so you can see what happens.

Dreamhost is hosting my sites. Using FTP I have access to a folder Maildir. Here I can find information about most of the sent messages that did’t arrive properly. This way I found out that some messages, sent by WordPress, are considered as spam.

<p>{$user_blog->blogdescription}</p> is not the solution.

I am using a nice but old theme. I guess it has something to do with the occurring problems.
So I reinstalled The Events Calender version 2.0.11. Everything works fine now here.
