I would have to disable a lot of the web site functionality in order to discover that.
I’ve disabled backups for now and will investigate alternative plugins for that function

….and the backup files are much smaller than previously
down to 8MB from 21MB

Well it partially fixes it. I now only have 2 backup files in the directory, but it is still making hourly backups!

Oh, thanks – sigh of relief, it’s not me doing something ‘wrong’. Why on earth can’t that be made more clear in the settings!! I’ve spent hours searching and fiddling around in code. More time than it took me to originally set up the site in the first place.

PS I forgot to add that I also have no plugins activated.
