I was experiencing the same thing today on one of my sites.

I figured it out. I created a home.php page and added my slider to it instead of using the header.php file. Now my template renders the home page instead of the index.php page as my home page by default.

I’m really enjoying WordPress so far, it’s a really intuitive, user friendly system.
