In your Downloads/Media tab which protection method have you chose?

Complete would be best I think, also have you ensured that the spelling of “default” is exactly as it is in the media library? Maybe add a new category and add that to the protected list too.

As ellbristow points out this is controlled in the WordPress settings.

It could be wp-config.php or your database that need altering, or perhaps both.

You need to make sure that you have “Require Invite Codes” and “Remove Code once used” both ticked. Have you done that?

If you have then the codes should be removed after they have been used and the accounts activated.
