Goto Appearance > Themes, then click on customize there. You’ll find plenty options to change colors there.
Changing the font is less trivial, the child theme approach would be better there.

As Andrew said, there’s no way to support IE8 without investing a lot of time. Which i’m not willing to do. I mean, come on, IE8 is vintage. This theme is aimed at modern browsers (and IE9/10).

This theme is not supporting vertical sidebars. Sorry!
