addendum: I got the carousel/gallery back on my site https://cityrat.com by installing saved old v. of the wp carousel plugin, but still searching in vain for a more elegant solution. thx.

also: external integration says: disabled
on the working one as above it says enabled.

just to add, i checked the path on the version ID page:

where it says, “wrong? report in forum”
and it goes to this error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_bloginfo() in /home/cityrat/cityrat.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-carousel/wp-carousel.php on line 145

ADDENDUM:
Whew. It seems to have been fixed. I tried the plugin as above, but it wasn’t even activated (“You are running WordPress 3.2 which doesn’t need the FTP Upgrade Fix plugin. You can deactivate and delete the plugin.”); when the admin panel came back up i activated it. Maybe it took a while to update the new files that i replaced.

However:
I get this message:
“An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.”
When i try to do the upgrade again, it tells me i’m already running the newest version. etc. etc.

ok, eek.
I followed the advice here:

and deleted the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on the site, downloaded 3.2 manually and uploaded those folders, and now I get THIS error message:

Ok, help! I tried to do an “auto upgrade” (via the button, i guess it’s a plugin? it’s not an option on my other sites so must be something i added) to 3.2 on my testing site (SO glad i have one) furgarden.com, and I first got stuck in the “scheduled maintenance” screen, and now it is totally stuck with this error screen:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare wp_maybe_load_embeds() (previously declared in /home/cityrat/furgarden.com/wp-includes/functions.php:3112) in /home/cityrat/furgarden.com/wp-includes/media.php on line 1415

and i can’t get to the dashboard, etc.
I’m not the least tech savvy person but I’m no database whiz; also, i have lots of plug-ins running (though i don’t think Buddypress is one of them).

What should i do?

I just went back and tried some of these solutions (just getting back into messing with it); For some reason, using both BNS Featured Category widget and open PHP widget using Widget Logic I was able to use
in_category(‘7’) in the widget logic field
and have it work properly (i.e. widget contains links from category 7 and only shows up on single posts that are in category 7. )

next, how to get it to show up on the home page ALSO if I want to. Anyone? My home page is not a page.

got messed up (moved over to above the right column instead of centered) when I upgraded this plugin to the newest version after updating WP. I found the below in the plugin notes.

I was able to remedy the situation by using the option at the bottom of the Smooth Slider admin page that allows you to toggle between “new” and “previous” versions. When set on “previous”, it went back to the correct formatting. I’d love to be able to upgrade it and use the new features though ??

!!IMP!! Do not upgrade to 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 if you have highly customized previous version of Smooth Slider, you may lose some CSS formatting as in the new versions the slider javascript is changed (due to licencing issues) and is different from previous versions.

Ugh, I’ve been looking for this for ages, too. I figured out the thumbnails everywhere else and featured content thumbs on the sidebar, and I have a feeling it’s really simple (like just adding something in the header template), but no one has answered any of my pleas for help:
