I have already updated to Imagely 2.0 (their new all in one template)
I usually run with Pro Mosaic galleries but I switched one over to Basic Thumbnails to see what was what.
Under ‘Customize Display Settings’ I set ‘Select View’ to ‘default-view.php’ and the thumbnails displayed with captions with no issues. (It also worked fine with the ‘Legacy’ setting.)
You should be fine!

I never use the basic thumbnails setting but I reset one of my galleries to take a peek.
To display captions I did the following from the main WordPress menu…

NextGen Gallery – Gallery Settings – Basic Thumbnails – Select View – Legacy

Then…

Legacy (Old) Templates – NextGEN Legacy:gallery-caption.php

It is important to note that each of your images must have a caption as this is what is displayed (not to be confused with the image title which does not display)
