  • Hey everyone,

Since none of the moderators ever seem to help out with questions anymore, I tinkered around and found my own solution.

Before you go messing around with your feed or feedburner after upgrading, check to see if your links are working! I was getting a 404 error with my feeds. What I found out later was that my permalinks were not working.

I was running a plugin called Netfirms Pretty Permalinks with 2.3, but that plugin does not seem to work with 2.5. Once I disabled that plugin, my permalinks – including the link to my original feed – started working.

So, as for the above, I went back to feedburner and changed my original feed address back to https://www.italofile.com/feed without the “index.php” part added in.

Hope this helps someone else out there!

Hi Moshu, Egbmike, and anyone else who’d like to help,

I was having the darnedest time trying to get my feed to work with feedburner after an upgrade to 2.5. After seeing egbmike’s feed address above, I changed my original feed address on feedburner to include the “index.php” part. And, lo and behold, Feedburner finally recognized my feed!

A problem I’m still having is adjusting the links on my website (www.italofile.com) so that they go to the address https://www.italofile.com/index.php/feed/. How do I edit the RSS widgets in my sidebar?

I’d love some help over here! Also, here’s my original posting about feed trouble: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/170046

    Thanks,
    Melanie

One extra thing…this never happened with my site before upgrading to WP 2.3. I wasn’t using Cutline then, either.

I tried renaming my theme to default (and default to default2) and it returned a fatal error. I changed it all back to the way it was, and things were fine.

I am using Cutline 2.1 theme and it is reverting everything back to default after about 24 hours or so. It appears to check out fine, but this keeps happening. I am, by the way, using Netfirms as my hosting company. So it’s possible there’s something wrong there.

Any help someone can give will be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi there,

How does this work exactly? I go to the SQL tab of wp_term_taxonomy and it says:

    SELECT * FROM wp_term_taxonomy WHERE 1

If I enter anything else, there’s no “submit” button. So I can’t figure out how the UPDATE coding above is supposed to work.

    Let me know.

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Did you find the answer to this? I was looking for something like this, too. Then, I noticed under Manage>Categories in 2.3 there is a link to “convert categories to tags.” Maybe this will work for the both of us!

    Good luck!

I know this topic is resolved, but it sounds like the problem I am having.

I just upgraded to 2.3.3 and everything seems to work fine. However, I did have to change my permalink structure to the default or with /index.php/ in front of the custom structure to get the links to work. Is what you say above true?

If you’re using the latest WordPress (2.3.1), then it will automatically recognize and redirect old permalinks after a permalink change.

Older versions of WordPress did not do this, so upgrade to the latest version *before* making such a permalink change.

So, does this mean that if someone has linked to a post of mine on another blog at sitename.com/2008/03/14/whatever then they will be redirected to the correct post even if it is now named sitename.com/index.php/2008/03/14/whatever?

    Your help is appreciated!

    Thanks, Moshu.

Actually…I figured this out myself. The previous link that I had bookmarked for my admin page was https://missadventures.com/blog/wp-admin/ but now I can access my dashboard at https://www.missadventures.com/wp-admin/. I don’t know why/how, but at some point my blog was in its own directory “*/blog/” but now it works in the root. I can see all internal links fine now. What about you?

Would you suggest that I delete all WP files in the /blog/ directory now and/or do an upgrade like I did in the root, just to be safe?

    Thanks again for your advice!

Uh oh…I spoke too soon. Last night, I was able to get to my admin panel. But when I went to the admin page today I got the message that I needed to upgrade my database. After I click on the link to upgrade, it says “You’re database is already upgraded” and gives me a link…back to my blog homepage. It’s an unstoppable loop and I can’t get back to the admin page. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

OMG! I can’t believe it – that worked! Oh happy day!

It appears that everything is working well now, so I think I’ll go try to upgrade my other blog, too.

Only problem, though, is that I can’t get Akismet to work anymore. I realize I probably need to install a newer version but I can’t get a new WP.com API key. The problem? I live in Turkey and WordPress.com is BANNED! So, do you know any way around that quagmire?

Other than that, this problem is resolved. Thanks for your help, Moshu!

P.S. The Upgrade Codex should be amended with your advice. Perhaps they can change it to:

NOTE DO NOT DELETE the wp-content folder. It requires special handling, as do the plugins and themes subfolders. You may wish to copy over individual files (e.g., /wp-contents/plugins/akismet.php) in order to have the newest version of a plugin or theme.

I, too, need a quick and dirty way to create a static front page for my site. Actually, I’d prefer to make a current page the “home” page instead of having my blog come up first thing.

I tried doing what was suggested on https://www.irakrakow.com/wptips/2006/04/19/plugin-static-sticky-front-page/ , but that didn’t work for me.

My site is https://www.missadventures.com and the blog is at https://www.missadventures.com/blog. Though when you type just the URL the blog page pops up. I don’t know how to get in to the site so that I can “move” the posts to a page called “blog.”

It all seems easy with the plugin, and that’s what I’d prefer to use. I’ve tried before to fool around with coding and have messed up my site so badly that I had to start all over again.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Just a quick reply to let you know that I got this figured out. Simply change your theme and the embedded calendar works! ??

I have an account, but that doesn’t seem to be the problem. Puzzling…

I’m getting my blog more to my liking. But, I’ve another question regarding parent/child categories.

As you’ll see on my blog – https://www.italofile.com – I figured out how to list categories in the sidebar. Now, I want that the categories (aka “tags”) listed under single posts list in some sort of organized fashion. For example, post “Regata della Befana, Venice” list tags like this:

Tag: Italofiles, Veneto, Festivals and Events, Out and About, By Area, Venice

I’d prefer them to look like this (hierarchical and alpha):

Tag: Italofiles, By Area, Veneto, Venice, Festivals and Events, Out and About

    Suggestions are appreciated!

    Thanks, M

That is somewhat helpful, yet a bit confusing for me. What I’d like to do is make sure that the category hierarchy is always displayed. For example, there are 5 posts in the category “Accommodations.” The subcategory “Hotels” has 4 posts and “Bed and Breakfasts” has 1 post. I want the categories to display like:

    Accommodations (5)
    Hotels (4)
    Bed and Breakfasts (1)

    And so on…

Is there somewhere in the category area where I can just specify this, rather than going through and adjusting the css coding?
