Thanks, Ying. Just one thing. When I wrote I was using a Cover block (image with text over). But it didn’t work on mobile. So I’ve changed the header back to a Featured Image. Do you know if there is any way I can make a featured image full-page width, please?

What you suggested is working now. But while it greys the img a bit, it also greys the text. My ideal would be a bit more like this page: https://zeihan.com/know-your-world/
Of course, it doesn’t have to be exactly the same.
But I’d like a piece of code that…
(1) Darkens the lower fifth or quarter of the img
(2) Makes the text stand out brightly on the darkened background.
(3) Makes a one or two px blue or purple frame round the pic on hover.
(4) Best of all, if the text could appear only on hover, and disappear after.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Your first code works great to brighten the link pics.
The second code works, but it makes the whole pic black, including the text. I was wanting something to darken the pic a little so that the text would be better seen. Do you have a revised version of this code?

As for the square pics, yes, I understand that 150×150 thumbnails are the right size. But for some reason they are all blurred. Any idea why this might be?

While we are talking about the PHP Ini settings, I note that my max_execution_time is set to 30000, while it says the default setting is 90. I’ve no idea who put in these settings.
Will this huge max_execution_time setting make any difference to the site’s functioning?

Thanks to all of you for this useful discussion. I’m having a similar problem.
So I went to MultiPHP INI Editor, and found the following…

MEMORY LIMIT 25600M
post_max_size 26000M
upload_max_filesize 25600G [G not M]

Yes, that’s right G not M. Does G stand for GB and M for MB? If so, I’ve got a big mismatch. This maybe started when I couldn’t upload a 2.2 MB file and I asked the Bluehost rep to help. (They don’t always know what they are doing.) S/He assured me it was now big and I could upload any file.
So should I set it all to 25600M?
Can I make it bigger if I want?
Can I make these settings as big as I like.
