Ok just to stay on this thread for just a little more.

My concern is obviously ‘worst case scenario’ when updating the wordpress theme. I’m always nervous hitting that button but its kind of no choice really. Hence the 8 year wait. ??

Correct me if I am wrong but updating the theme affects both the codebase and the mysql database?

So having a backup of the codebase and db ready in case the result is not ideal would be to just overwrite the codebase with the backup and restore the DB?

I know it sounds obvious. belts and braces etc.

Thanks. I think what you are describing is a kind of migration path. What I am looking to do is set up a new fresh install with the latest generate press theme and import the posts – text, images and comments into the posts section of the new install.

It might be off topic but in terms of themes it allows me to start fresh instead of updating versions which may have dodgy code embedded somewhere. I’m not sure if this is a real threat and hope that any malware would be discovered by malware software detection but its a cleaner option for the webhost, i guess.

That sounds about right. The situation is that the site has been hacked several times recently and after restoring and installing wordfence the brute force attacks have been blocked but I am not sure of the integrity of the website folder and files which (apparently) could contain hidden malicious code or other backdoor exploits. FYI the website is star4cast.com.

I am thinking of starting from scratch – not entirely a new design but setting up the basic design and then exporting/importing the posts/images and comments. There are quite a few going back to before 2015. I would use the updated Generate Press as the theme. Any ideas on how to do this – ie get the old data out and into a new codebase of wordpress?

Thanks in advance for any tips. Moving data seems to be a tricky issue.
