I resolved this issue at the cost of losing three plugins.
I did a bulk deactivation of all Plugins, then activated them one at a time. After each activation I checked whether I could edit the one Page which previously had displayed as a completely blank screen.
It turned out that three Plugins produced the blank screen effect:
– WordPress Database Backup Ver 2.2.2
– WP-RelativeDate Ver 1.5.0
– WP Security Scan Ver 2.7.1
When these were deactivated, the Page edit interface for the problem page was normal; when any them were activated, the page displayed blank.
I had noticed that the daily auto backup controlled by WordPress Databse Backup had stopped working since I upgraded to WP 2.8. Though how these three plugins interact with the edit interface of one Page and not others boggles my mind.
