Thanks. The erroneous entry was in the cyclone slider settings which made the height 600 compared to the height of the images which is 475px.

If anyone is following this, I moved to another theme to overcome my limitations on twenty twelve. Perhaps if/when I develop better coding skills, I can revisit the twenty twelve theme.

I should probably clarify that the first site listed ….

https://dev.avmi.net

is NOT running the twenty twelve theme. Only the second site, with the confusing menu behavior on a mobile device …

https://temp.avmi.net

is running a child theme of twenty twelve.

Resolved by changing size of table width to fit defined value of 960 px.

That worked exactly as planned.

Getting the logo to the location that I wanted was done with edits to the style.css file. I have subsequently seen methods to move the logo that involved edits to the header.php file.

Would I encounter fewer problems going forward if I abandoned the edits to the style.css file in favor of edits to the header.php file?

Can I even get the logo to its current location using edits to the header.php file along?

After further searching the forums, I resolved the problem by adding the following to the style.css file…

.site-header {
margin-top: -23px;
padding: 0;
}
