Is this really the solution. Asking people to go in and change code in WordPress so the Plugin will play nicely? This needs to be fixed ASAP

This helps. I am still not able to get it to fully replicate the way our featured image displays. But this is much better. So moving forward we have set everything to 600 x 320 as that’s what our featured image size is. So we will crop everything to those specs and hope for the best.
