In reply to: How to prevent Admin access for logged-in users?>they do not have admin access by normal<
On my WP site logged-in users (subscribers) have a “Site Admin” link that takes them to the Dashboard which I definitely don’t want.
Immediately after login, the user is taken to the Dashboard which I think I can eliminate with Peter’s Login Redirect plugin. But I also want to eliminate the “Site Admin” link that takes the user to the Dashboard.

In reply to: Login takes user to the dashboard!>Take the .sql file from the database backup and open in a text editor–good sign file is intact.<
You mean that if the .sql file opens in a text editor (notepad or wordpad), then it is not corrupted? And it if is corrupted, it probably won’t even open in a text editor?

In reply to: Login takes user to the dashboard! Thanks for that link to the info on backups. I’ve found plugins Role Scoper and Register Plus which seem like just what I was looking for, and I’ll definitely do a backup before I install them.
Any words of wisdom regarding making sure the backup (and restore if required) work?

In reply to: How to add user roles?>Roles_and_Capabilities in the docs section has some resources listed at the end that may be helpful<
Thanks. Somehow I had missed that list. I’ll check out all of them.

In reply to: How to add user roles?>You’ll need a role management plugin to extend the default roles.<
Would that also allow adding new roles?

In reply to: Login takes user to the dashboard!I’ve installed Peter’s Login Redirect and see that it uses roles, but I can’t find any way to add roles to my WP site, nor have I found a plugin to add roles. is there a way to add user roles?

In reply to: Login takes user to the dashboard!I would provide login for users who (1) opt to get additional content in return for providing their contact information, (2) are members of specific groups who get to access their-group-only content, (3) have content specific to them only (specific clients), etc. That’s what user roles are all about.

In reply to: Login takes user to the dashboard! Thanks! I’ll try that plugin when I have more time. It seems to provide a lot of functionality.
I am curious why WP was designed to take logged-in users to the dashboard which would completely mystify normal users.

In reply to: Comment-author’s website link takes user off my siteI found the place in comments.php, a file in the template I’m using, that displayed the field to enter the comment author’s website URL. I just deleted those lines and now there’s no opportunity for the comment author to enter a website URL.
In the “blog world”, is there a good reason to allow a comment author to include a website URL so the viewer can link to it?
Bingo! That was it. Thanks so much.

In reply to: Newbie question about users posting comments to blog posts>Can’t you just put the “More” link in after a few lines?
That will put the “Read more >>” link at that point.<The entire post is on the blog page, so “More” really wouldn’t show more. But even if that weren’t true, wouldn’t that “More” link also appear in the post on the separate post page? Or possibly I don’t understand what you mean; as I said, I’m a newbie.

In reply to: Newbie question about users posting comments to blog postsHmm, I don’t find that code (I’m using a template). My index.php loads a file which loads other files, but so far I can’t find anything like <? php the_content(); ?> . It’s too late now to pursue this so I’ll take another look when I have time.

In reply to: How to make current-page name on menu highlighted? Thanks, SimonJ. That article looks like it’s intended for what I want. However, instead of tackling that I just now put a question on the blog of the author of the theme I’m using to see if he can give me a way to do it. It that doesn’t work I’ll dig into that article on my own.
