In reply to: twenty eleven: no support for sidebars in Pages?Well, batspit.
I just ran through your checklist, refreshed my site (locally; I don’t have a copy online yet) and now it works. I love it when that happens; I didn’t change a thing.
So, a couple of questions:
1. since the Pages are in the DB, I only have to change their template once (not for the parent and child themes), right?
2. is there some way to batch change all my Pages to use the sidebar template? I have over 100 of them, and would prefer not to do them individually if possible.
3. is there a way to make the sidebar template the default for all new Pages I create? Thanks…
EDIT:
In explicit answer to your question, I’m using the sidebar template; I haven’t tried using either the plug-in or the code edit. I’m hoping to avoid the latter.

In reply to: twenty eleven: no support for sidebars in Pages? Thanks, alchymyth. I don’t know what’s going on here…sidebars are enabled in my twenty eleven theme, and my child theme. I’ve chosen one page to test with, and set its template to sidebar…still nothing.
Thanks for the tip on functions.php().

In reply to: twenty eleven: no support for sidebars in Pages?I tried your first suggestion already. I may be doing something wrong, but I don’t get a sidebar, even when I specify the sidebar template for a Page.
And, I am using a child theme already.

In reply to: twenty eleven: no support for sidebars in Pages?Thank you for the link. The instructions look clear and easy to follow. Before I begin: when you say “add a functions.php file to that folder,” do you mean grab a copy of that file from the parent theme?

In reply to: 2011: replacing header images with my ownThey’re not there (in the child theme). Perhaps I did something wrong (or incomplete) in creating the child theme, but…it seems to be working otherwise.

In reply to: 2011: replacing header images with my ownOK…I’ve got a follow-up question. I went ahead and loaded a bunch of images. Now, I’ve decided to create a child theme. Can I somehow grab those automatically, or do I need to go through the upload process again?
I don’t mind repeating the work, but I’d prefer not to have two copies of the header images if possible.
Thanks.

In reply to: Removing a sidebarSo…how do you enable the sidebar? I’ve used Dashboard->Appearance->Theme Options, and changed the default layout, but still no sidebar on my system.

In reply to: thinking of converting to 2011With respect to the above question, I’ve been able to accomplish what I wanted to by loading a copy of my site on my desktop, so I’ll consider this resolved. If anyone’s reading, though, it might be a cool feature in the future to allow the developer to view one theme while another one is “in production.”

In reply to: 2011: replacing header images with my ownExcellent! That is a very nice feature. Thank you.

In reply to: documentation on Twenty Eleven…Thanks, esmi. I’ve used a plugin based on that in the past. I found that it made for some fairly big downloads, as the entire menu structure (not just what was visible) was loaded for every page. I was hoping to streamline and avoid that.

In reply to: documentation on Twenty Eleven…OK, thanks!

In reply to: documentation on Twenty Eleven…Hi, PAE –
Yes, that’s exactly what I meant. Thanks.
This solution, while simple enough, is a bit more “manual” than I had expected. Is there a way to automate this based on pages’ parents?
Thanks again.

In reply to: moving DB from remote server to desktopOK, I appear to have my oars back in the water.
The problem was that I duplicated pathnames. The entry in the DB should only point to the document root. Apparently, Apache takes care of the rest.
