Thanks for the help on this, there were three issues to resolve:
1. Mod rewrite needed to be enabled
2. The extraction needed to be manual
3. As noted in original reply, the installer was corrupt, the packaged installer was needed.
Sorted these out and the installation worked flawlessly. Used the WP plugin Velvet Blue to update URLs in the database once restored.
