Forum: Developing with WordPress
In reply to: Block wget and similar programsHey thanks,
The reason why I would like to do this is because I will try to stream videos and my bandwidth would be hosed if people tried to download it with wget. On a similar note what would be the best method to store multimedia files so that people could not download the whole directory?Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: YouTube : possible to disable opening up youtube page?get off your high horse man. obviously if sites like myspace implement such a feature its not something forbidden / illegal. I believe its a legitimate question and didn’t ask for a pseudo moralistic speech…

In reply to: YouTube : possible to disable opening up youtube page?umm nope. youtube is advertised with their logo and that should be enough. furthermore I have seen sites like mysapce implement such a feature.
Nevermind I solved it – it was my bad. The links for the categories had href=”?cat=2″ rather than “https://url/?cat=2” …after changing the links works fine now. Thanks!
Hmm I did run into a problem.
I set up my permalinks to be like this https://url/postname.html
initially it works. I can browse main index, archives, etc, select a particular post and get the singple post view. The problem is after this.I have navigation to my categories on a horizontal bar below the header. If I click a category…the url will become
https://url/postname.html/?cat=5
rather then go straight to the category like this
this is a big problem because the user gets stuck with the single post article (https://url/postname.html or https://url/postname.html/?cat=5) and can’t get out of it unless they click home…then it goes back to https://url
anybody can help clear this up with the permalink not rendering categories correctly?
Holy shit..I didn’t know this! I have been wanting to use the pretty permalinks for months but I thought if I changed the defaults urls all the old incoming links would be lost. I did change to pretty permalinks and the incoming links are still good.
HandySolo thanks for this info!
Out of curiosity I chose /%postname%.html
to be my permalink (did not use dates at all just /website/postname.html). I’m wondering if two posts have the same name what would happen?Hey that sounds promising but could you explain that in laymens terms? Does that mean if i change to this format /2007/03/18/sample-post/…incoming links using the older ?=199 would still work as well?

In reply to: Cant view wordpress properly from other computersI can confirm that it does work. Stupid me typed in the wrong ip address the first time. In Dashboard –> Options I set it to the correct local lan ip address and it now works on my local computer as well as the other computers in my lan! Now I can see how the nasty IE 6 is going to bork my website ??

In reply to: Cant view wordpress properly from other computersHey thanks for the help. I did try to change the localhost setting in Dashboard–>Options and it didn’t seem to work for me. I follwed drmike’s advice and just uploaded the directory into a subdirectory on my website. That works well and lets me tinker with the settings and test it on various browsers/platforms. I appreciate the help thanks again…cheers
Trent thanks! Do you know how I can increase the size of the standard thumbnail?
